When to Call a Emergency Dentist and to Seek Emergency Medical Care
Are you experiencing severe or worsening tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, or swelling around a tooth or gum? Then you might need emergency dental care.
Seek emergency medical care immediately if swelling makes it hard to breathe, swallow or speak; swelling is spreading toward your eye or neck; or you have a serious injury or bleeding that will not stop with pressure. Do not wait for a dental appointment in these situations
Dental Emergencies We Assess
- Severe toothache: Persistent, worsening or intense pain, including pain when biting.
- Swelling or a possible dental infection: Swelling around a tooth, the gums or the face needs prompt assessment. See the emergency medical advice above if it is severe or spreading.
- Broken, cracked or chipped tooth: Especially when the tooth is painful, sharp or damaged after an injury.
- Knocked-out or displaced permanent tooth: Time matters. Call immediately and follow the steps below.
- Lost crown or filling: An exposed tooth may become sensitive or need repair.
- Injury to the teeth or mouth: Including a loose tooth or bleeding after an accident.
- Problems after recent dental treatment: Call if you develop worsening pain, swelling or another unexpected concern.

What to Do Before Your Appointment
These steps can help while you arrange care. They do not replace a dental examination.
Knocked-out permanent tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly and gently; do not scrub it. If you can, gently place it back in the socket. Otherwise, keep it moist in milk and bring it with you. Call immediately. Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back in its socket; call a dentist for advice.
Toothache or swelling
Rinse gently with warm water. If you think food is trapped, floss carefully. A cold compress against the outside of the cheek may help with swelling. Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Call for an assessment, especially if pain is severe or swelling is increasing.
Broken tooth or lost restoration
Save any tooth fragment, crown or filling you can find. Avoid chewing on that side and arrange an assessment. If the tooth has a sharp edge, take care not to injure your cheek or tongue.
Bleeding after an injury
Apply steady pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding is heavy or does not stop, or the injury is serious, seek emergency medical care.
What to Expect at an Emergency Dental Visit
Tell our dental team what happened, when the problem started and whether you have pain, swelling or an injury.
At the visit, the dentist will assess the affected area and discuss the findings with you. Dental X-rays may be recommended if they are needed to understand the problem. The dentist will explain suitable treatment options and any care that may need a separate appointment. Ask about the expected fees and insurance coverage before agreeing to treatment.
What can be done at the first visit depends on the diagnosis, the treatment required and appointment availability.
Possible Emergency Dental Treatments
The right treatment depends on an examination. Depending on the cause and extent of the problem, options may include a dental filling for a damaged area, root canal treatment when the inside of a tooth is affected, or a dental crown to restore a tooth that needs more protection. If a tooth cannot be saved, the dentist will discuss whether an extraction is appropriate; learn more about our oral surgery services.
